Terms like these are called reduplications, expressions formed by the repetition of a sound, syllable or word.

Join Chrysti the Wordsmith as she reveals the unique role of reduplications in our language and how they help us express contempt, confusion, movement and affection!

School will soon be out for the summer but don’t forget the library stays open and the doors for reading are wide open! The Big Sky Community Library will once again be offering Summer Reading Programs.

This year’s K-5 theme is “Make a SPLASH @ Your Library!” Every Wednesday at 4:00 from June 16th-July 23rd a program is offered. Don’t miss out on our first program of the summer, June 16th, The Birds of Prey. AJ, from West Yellowstone’s Discovery Center will present 3 different birds: a great horned owl, a rough legged hawk and possibly a golden eagle. Come learn more about the raptors in our area!
For the young adult and high school students grades 6th and up, Make Waves @ your Library, is offered every Tuesday at 4:00 beginning June 15th. Dani and Mrs. McClain have some fun things planned for this age group! Check it out!
The ever-popular story time, designed for toddlers-Pre-K, will continue every Monday at 10:30 with a weekly “water” theme.
For community members, Chrysti the Wordsmith will make a visit Tuesday, July 20th at 7:00. She will share her insights of her new book coming out this fall called “A Calendar of Cliché’s.”

From preschooler’s to adults, this summer’s Library programs offer something for everyone! We’re all set for a great summer at the library; we hope you’ll join us! All programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library and are free and open to the public!

In a presentation of words and photos, several Big Sky locals will share experiences of their recent travels to Kenya,Tanzania and Uganda.The speakers all traveled independently of one another, touching lives and opening their hearts to the people and places of Africa.
The speakers look forward to sharing their experiences with you bringing a little bit of life in a distant continent to our corner of the world here in Big Sky.

Traditional African refreshments will be served.

Shane Doyle is an enrolled member of the Crow Tribe who hales from Crow Agency, MT. Currently a Doctoral Candidate in Curriculum and Instruction at MSU-Bozeman, Shane has 10 years of teaching experience in Montana.
Please join us at 7:00, for a community presentation!
Shane will focus on the nature of Montana Plains Indian oral tradition as it relates to the four seasons and the parade generations.

"A Journalist's Perspective on Wars in the Arab/Islamic World" with Clay Scott

This presentation by veteran foreign correspondent Clay Scott will look at the work of journalists covering wars and conflicts, exploring broad questions about foreign news coverage, as well as issues specific to war reporting.

Clay Scott is a former correspondent for ABC News and Monitor Radio. He covered the Bosnian war, the 1996 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the war in Chechnya, and other conflicts. He won an Emmy for his coverage of the Kosovo refugee crisis.

This presentation is free and open to the public. Partial funding for the Speakers Bureau program is provided by a legislative grant from Montana’s Cultural Trust and from NEH’s “We the People” program.

Want a chance to see the new library ahead of the crowd? Come to the NEW library entrance on the north side of Ophir School at 9am on Monday, November 12th. You can help your library and satisfy your curiosity, at the same time!

Big Sky Community Library will re-open to the public on Tuesday November 27th. Please come to our Grand Opening from 6 to 8 pm. (The doors will open that day at 4 pm.) On that day, library materials will be available for checkout, as usual, and we'll be back in business! In the meantime, please come to our library move-in work party on Monday, November 12th.

If you haven't yet checked out this resource available from our library website, please do! Big Sky Community Library has a subscription to the TumbleBook Library, which allows you to view and listen to books for children, online. There are also games and puzzles for your young ones at this site.

An interesting further option at this site is the ability to expose your child to learning other languages, by having picture books read aloud to him or her in French, Spanish, or Russian! If you're interested, go to the TumbleBook site, and click on the pink button labeled "Language Learning".

You may access our TumbleBooks subscription by going to our website, clicking on e-Resources and then choosing the TumbleBooks link embedded in the page, or you can just click on either one of the TumbleBooks icons IN THIS VERY POST!

Fantastic Construction News!

Initially, the plan for our expansion was to first renovate our old space, and move back into that existing space temporarily in September (with a large portion of the collection remaining in storage), while construction continued in the new section well into winter. Our final move-in to the new space was slated for January. This meant that September-January we'd be putting up with an incomplete collection, and a general mess all around.

We've just received good news of a change in construction plans: Our contractor is focusing on completing the library expansion entirely, by sometime in October. Essentially, in exchange for opening about one month later than anticipated (and one month during which we'd have only been provisionally open), we're gaining two or three months of having construction completed in our new facility! We're thrilled, not only to share our new space with you sooner, but also to now have only have one more move facing us, instead of two.

Construction is well underway!

As you can see in the photo, the library's exterior wall and windows have been removed, and the footprint for the expansion is taking shape. It's almost unbelievable, seeing our formerly crowded library completely gutted like this!

So there's a construction update for the end of July. Be watching here for more information. As soon as we know anything definitive about when, exactly, we'll be able to re-open, we'll let you know!

2007 Summer Reading Program

We're still having a fabulous summer reading program, this summer! Our program will be self-paced and will be able to be completed without having to come to Big Sky Library. You'll probably need to go visit Bozeman's beautiful library at least once or twice this summer, anyway, right? If you haven't yet gone to see it, you really should, soon!

We have two different categories for the summer reading program this year: K-5th grade, and 4th-12th grade. If you want to participate, click on your category for a printable pdf of the program brochure. Have fun this summer! Read, read, read!

We are very sorry to have to report that Big Sky Community Library will close for construction on June 9th, and is estimated to re-open (still under construction) in mid-September.

Thanks to the Big Sky community's show of support for the Ophir School Bond issue last October, the library's square footage will increase by nearly 1,800 square feet. Construction should be finished in January, 2008, and we look forward to sharing our new facility with you. We sincerely appreciate your patience through this time of change and look forward to offering a more comfortable and useful learning enviromment for all!

David Quammen Visits the Library!

June 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the Big Sky Chapel Community Room

Even though the library will be closed for the summer, we are very excited to have a special author visit from Bozeman local, David Quammen. His topic for discussion is “Charles Darwin: The Secret Life of a Conservative Revolutionary.” He’ll be discussing Darwin the scientist and Darwin the man, drawing of facts and narrative from his recent book, The Reluctant Mr. Darwin (W.W. Norton, 2006). In particular, he’ll explore one of the least known, most quiet, and yet most dramatic periods of his life— the years just after the voyage of the Beagle, when he developed his theory of evolution.

David has been a Montanan for 35 years and a freelance writer for 30. He has published 11 books, including The Song of the Dodo, and hundreds of magazine articles. Presently he holds a position as Contributing Writer for National Geographic and works for other magazines such as Harper’s. He has received the National Magazine Award three times. Quammen holds the Wallace Stegner Chair of Western American Studies at MSU.

We are looking forward to this program and hope you’ll be able to join us. All programs are sponsored by the Friends of Library and are free and open to the public.

August 17, 2007: Annual Benefit Golf Tournament Takes Place

Friday, August 17th is the date for the annual Friends of the Library Three Amigos Golf Tournament this year. This is Big Sky Community Library's main fundraiser of the year, with all proceeds going directly to the Library.

Every year teams participate in a 3-person scramble that's quite a party, and enjoy a fantastic Mexican Fiesta buffet afterward. (In the photo, above, FOL member, scramble participant, and our favorite party guy, Jon Holtzman, is well into the spirit of the event at last year's tournament... That's what we like to see!) Please join us for this fantastically fun event supporting a good cause!
